INSTRUCTOR TRAINING COURSES |
|
Welcome to
Freedom Rider Training,
and thank you for your enquiry about our Instructor Training programme.
Firstly, we would like to take this opportunity to give you some
background about the process of becoming a Driving Standards Agency (DSA), Approved
Motorcycle Instructor. There are three levels of Instructor currently
approved by the DSA. These are as follows:
CBT1
: Can teach Compulsory Basic
Training and A2 (125cc and below only)
Cardington Assessed: As CBT1 but also
authorised to train and supervise other CBT1 instructors.
DAS: Direct Access Scheme approved. Must
have successfully completed the two-day Cardington assessment before
taking this level. When passed, is authorised to teach "big bike"
courses.
There are many schools on the market today who claim
that they can get anybody to Cardington standard within a very short
space of time (usually about 2 weeks). We do not believe this is an
accurate claim. The Cardington assessment is a very intensive two-day
continual assessment of the candidate’s ability to not only teach CBT to
a high standard but also of their ability to recognise and correct
faults in other Instructors techniques. Obviously, this requires a very
high level of skill and experience. It stands to reason that the
necessary experience and skills cannot be fully instilled in the
candidate in such a short time scale.
The fact that the current first
time pass rate at Cardington is in the region of 13% proves that these
two week wonder courses do not always work.
As the Cardington assessment allows you to train,
supervise, and diagnose faults in other Instructors teaching techniques,
we believe you need to have some experience in teaching and running
courses yourself before attempting this.
Here at
Freedom, we take the view that we can get you
to the required standard in a sensible safe and progressive way. Our
Instructor Courses have been designed after
consultation with the DSA,
and are aimed at equipping you with the necessary "hands on" experience
to teach to a very high standard. Your course will begin with a five day
foundation course during which you will cover all aspects of the CBT. |
|
You will also cover a wide range of instructional
techniques and use them in a realistic environment. Other parts of the
course will include observing and assisting with a
live CBT
and, possibly, a live DAS course
as well.
Once the foundation course is complete, and you have
satisfied our Instructors that you have the ability to
teach Compulsory
Basic Training to a high standard, you will be issued with a
certificate, and are then able to look for employment as a CBT1
Instructor (and indeed, can apply for the Cardington assessment if you
wish, although as already stated, we do not recommend this until you
have had some "live" training experience yourself).
Please remember that most
training schools have their own recruitment policy, and will wish to see
you demonstrate your abilities
before offering you a CBT1 card, even though you may be at the required
standard.
Alternatively, you will be able
to continue your training with
Freedom under the supervision
of a qualified Instructor, over a period of weeks. (1 day per week is
the norm but we are flexible
to your needs). Once we are satisfied that you have reached the required
standard, we may offer you a CBT1 card for the school. This will enable
you to gain valuable experience in teaching real CBT’s to
real students.
You training will be ongoing and you will be given every opportunity to
develop to Cardington standard at your own pace.
Once your Cardington assessment has been passed, you
will be able to prepare for your DAS assessment.
All the above mentioned training is included in the
£899-00 cost of the course.
Once you have completed your course, you are always
welcome to return to our school for advice or guidance, at no extra
charge. If we can help you in any possible way, you can be assured we
will.
Please bear in mind that if you fail the Cardington
Assessment you will have your CBT1 card withdrawn. Should you fail the
Cardington Assessment twice, you will have to wait a year before you can
attempt it again, and your CBT1 card may be withheld until you have
satisfactorily completed further training.
Our Instructors
We have several Instructors who are Direct Access and
Cardington qualified who assist in our Instructor Training programme. In
the main, however, the courses are run by Steve Smithers, who has been a
Motorcycle Instructor for 10 years. In addition to this, he holds
the highest civilian qualification obtainable for advanced motorcycling
- RoSPA Gold
- and is the Chief Observer (Motorcycle Section) for the
North East London branch of RoSPA. Steve is also a member of the
Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), having passed their advanced
test, and is also a member of the Guild of Experienced Motorists. He is
a holder of a BTEC (Distinction)
for Advanced and Defensive Riding.
Steve is one of the few who passed their Cardington assessment by
scoring 100%. Steve also holds the RoSPA Diploma, the highest advanced
motorcycle teaching qualification available in this country. |
