ADVANCED RIDING |
The highest advanced motorcycling teaching qualification available in the country is the RoSPA Diploma. This has to be retaken every three years to ensure that standards are maintained. The instructor cannot even get on the Diploma course without being able to ride at RoSPA gold standard which is the highest riding qualification in the country. If you train with a Diploma holder then you are guaranteed to be getting the best possible training. There are some schools around who use Police class one riders. Whilst these guys are undoubtedly extremely skilful, it does not necessarily follow that they are good instructors. Another thing to consider is that whilst they are used to using blue lights and sirens to warn other road users of their presence on the road, the majority of us do not have that advantage.
Ask yourself a question - When was the last time you used blues lights and sirens on the road? Not really relevant to the vast majority of road riders in this country is it? This is in no way meant to be detrimental to police riders but all we are saying is that just because you are a good rider does not automatically mean that you are a good teacher!
Another thing to check is the instructors qualifications. These should be displayed in a prominent place at the training centre or at least readily available for inspection on request. Also check that the advanced qualification being produced to you is for motorcycling not car driving. This a common scam that misleads the unsuspecting student. As you are well aware, there is a world of difference between driving a car and riding a motorcycle.

Advanced courses are designed for any rider who wishes to improve any aspect of his or her riding, as well as for those who wish to take an advanced motorcycle test. Having passed an advanced test qualifies you for an automatic discount on your bike insurance, in addition to you now being one of the safest riders on the road. Obviously, you don’t have to take an advanced test to benefit from an advanced course. It will clearly show in your riding from then on. Advanced courses are much more involved than the Direct Access or Restricted Access course you may have taken to obtain your full licence. To benefit from advanced techniques it is necessary to condition your mental approach as well as your physical operation of the controls. If you find yourself struggling whilst out with your mates despite having a great bike beneath you, chances are you are getting frustrated, and your confidence seems to be on an irreversible downward spiral. A tailor-made advanced riding course will make a massive difference to you. All advanced courses begin with an informal chat between you and your Instructor. This is to enable us to get a ‘feel’ for what level you are riding at, and to identify any problems or areas of concern. This is followed by an assessed ride where your Instructor will follow you for a reasonable period of time. During this ride your Instructor will be conspicuous by his silence. This first ride is vitally important to the rest of the course. It allows us to examine your general ability and to focus on areas that may need attention. It is very important that you are able to be totally open with us in order for us to be able to make a real difference to your riding. Advanced riding is as much about mental agility and preparation as it is about machine operation and control. Once we have completed your initial assessment we will be able to sit down with you and tailor the course to your exact requirements. Advanced riding is for everyone. There are no ‘trade secrets’ or shadowy clubs with closed memberships. Anyone who rides a motorcycle can benefit from some form of advanced training. The end result will be that you are a smoother and safer rider at the end of the course. Being smoother and safer usually means you will be faster too (if you want to go faster you now have the option to do so more safely). Too often we all meet riders who have spent hundreds or even thousands of pounds on ‘go-faster’ bits for their bikes but are still being left behind on the roads. They then sell the bike for something faster and start all over again. Why spend all that money on modifications and then give it all to someone else when the bike is sold?
